Championing decolonial and grassroots approaches to Syrian knowledge production, we nurture the development of Syrian knowledge and fortify local ownership over the construction of a peaceful, inclusive and rights-based society.

Our research is accordingly characterized by a diverse thematic base, covering topics from non-violent activism and transformative justice to human rights work and women’s active participation.

Badael’s research program is a crucial tenet of our endeavors to advance the development of grassroots and feminist knowledge production in Syria in order to promote more active and better informed approaches to Syrian memory and citizenship. Our research work is rooted in the belief that the enhancement of theoretical and practical knowledge on issues pertinent to the Syrian context is a necessary intellectual foundation to any rights-based society of the future.

Fostering grassroots knowledge production

تشجيع إنتاج المعرفة محلياً  

Building on a successful track-record of interdisciplinary research and collaborations, the program brings together researchers and intellectuals to engage in explorations of the history and nature of peacebuilding and activism in Syria with the specific aim of shining a light on neglected aspects of study, such as women’s role in the civic and political spheres of Syrian society. 

بناءً على سجل حافل من الأبحاث والتعاون متعدد التخصصات، يجمع البرنامج بين الباحثين والمفكرين للمشاركة في استكشافات تاريخ وطبيعة بناء السلام والنشاطية  في سوريا. ويسعى الى تسليط الضوء على دراسة الجوانب المهملة،  ويتبنى البرنامج إطاراً نسوياً تقاطعياً، للوصول لتحليلات متعمقة في البحث.

The Civil Society Support Program (CSSP) is one of Badael’s earliest initiatives and remains a central pillar of our work. Established in 2013, the CSSP was designed in response to the urgent need to strengthen grassroots civil society groups in Syria.

Meanwhile, our resolve to foster a culture of cooperation and trust within Syrian civil society has resulted the facilitation of 63 coordination meetings. These meetings have created spaces for communication and the strengthening of trust between CSGs that cater for the cultivation of more coordinated and impactful civil society action. Finally, the program continues to support our partners in the translation of their new knowledge and capacities into action offering guidance to over 15 local campaigns and funding a total of 40 rights-based and peacebuilding projects designed and implemented entirely by our partners tailored to the communities they serve.

في غضون ذلك، ساهمت تدخلاتنا في تعزيز ثقافة التعاون والثقة داخل المجتمع المدني السوري من خلال تيسير 63 اجتماعًا تنسيقيًا. خلقت هذه الاجتماعات مساحات للتواصل والعمل المشترك وتعزيز الثقة بين مجموعات المجتمع المدني ضمن المناطق الجغرافية الواحدة ومع مناطق أخرى مما ساهم في تطور عمل المجتمع المدني ليصبح أكثر تنسيقًا وفاعلية وتأثيرًا. بالإضافة لذلك يعمل البرنامج على تقديم جلسات معرفية حول تجارب المجتمع المدني في سياقات مشابهة للسياق السوري. 

كما يواصل البرنامج دعم شركائنا في ترجمة معارفهم وامكانياتهم إلى أفعال ومشاريع تخدم مجتمعاتهم، لقد قدمنا الدعم التقني والمالي لأكثر من 15 حملة محلية نفذها شركائنا، كما ودعمنا أكثر من 40 مشروع تم تصميمها وتنفيذها من قبل شركائنا.

Badael believes that grassroots civil society actors are uniquely positioned within their communities to realize social change and have the potential to generate significant impact. 

تعتقد بدائل أن الفاعلين والفاعلات في المجتمع المدني على مستوى القاعدة يتمركزون بشكل أساسي وفريد داخل مجتمعاتهم، ويسعون لتحقيق التغيير الاجتماعي والسياسي ويمتلكون القدرة على إحداث تأثير كبير.

Through our ongoing interactions, we have facilitated the fine-tuning of our partners’ technical and organizational expertise, providing a variety of knowledge and capacity building activities including 509 training workshops, 367 consultation sessions and 27 Civil Society Series.

من خلال تدخلاتنا المستمرة، قمنا بتسهيل وتدعيم الخبرة التقنية والتنظيمية لشركائنا، وإتاحة المعرفة من خلال أنشطة متنوعة من بناء القدرات حيث وصل عدد الورشات التدريبية المقدمة إلى 509 ورشة عمل، و367 جلسة استشارية و27 جلسة مجتمع المدني.

يعد برنامج دعم المجتمع المدني (CSSP) من أولى برامجنا ولا يزال ركيزة أساسية لعملنا. تأسس البرنامج في عام 2013، وقد تم تصميمه استجابة للحاجة الملحة لتعزيز وتمكين التجمعات المدنية المحلية في سوريا. ندعم التجمعات المدنية وقدرتها على الصمود وإحداث التغيير الحقيقي في المجتمعات التي يعلمون من أجلها.

Following the outpouring of civil society action touched off by the Syrian revolution in 2011, civil society groups have assumed a diverse array of roles as human rights defenders, peacebuilders, and humanitarian actors.

بدأت أعمال المجتمع المدني تظهر وتتفعل بشكل تدريجي، بعد انطلاق الثورة السورية في عام 2011، وما أن بدأ تكوين مجموعات المجتمع المدني يتبلور في إطار مجموعة متنوعة من الأدوار كمدافعين ومدافعات عن حقوق الإنسان وبناة سلام وفاعلين وفاعلات في المجال الإنساني، تزامن ظهور وتدخل بدائل لدعم مجموعات المجتمع المدني الناشطة او التي تخطط لبناء السلام في المجتمع السوري.

Grounded in this philosophy, the CSSP engages with the evolving needs and work of our local partners and buttresses their development as resolute human rights defenders and peacebuilders within their communities.

يتبنى البرنامج فلسفة العمل القاعدية التي تؤمن بقدرات الفاعلين و الفاعلات على احداث تغيير حقيقي ضمن مجتمعاتهم، ويرتكز نهجنا على التعامل مع الاحتياجات الناشئة وتحليلها والاستجابة لها من خلال دعمنا  لعمل شركائنا من التجمعات المدنية المحلية ودعم عملهم كمدافعين ومدافعات حازمات عن حقوق الإنسان وبناة سلام داخل مجتمعاتهم.

Since the establishment of the program, Badael has supported over 300 civil society groups in Syria.

منذ تأسيس البرنامج، دعمت بدائل أكثر من 300 مجموعة من منظمات المجتمع المدني في سوريا.

Mobilizing individuals from across Syrian society, the program sets out to further the democratization of civic knowledge and champion the development of inclusive grassroots activism from the individual through to the community.

With 12 debates, Badael has introduced the concept of debating and enhanced participants’ critical analysis skills. Furthermore, we have supported community influencers to hold 30 sessions on human rights, peacebuilding and gender-related issues.

من خلال نشاط المناظرات بين المشاركين والمشاركات تدعم بدائل مهارات التحليل النقدي والبحث لدى المشاركين والمشاركات، نفذنا 12 مناظرة و دعمنا 30 منحة صغيرة لشابات لتنفيذ أنشطة تتعلق بمفاهيم الوعي المدني ضمن مجتمعاتهن. إضافة لتنفيذ /37/ ورشة تدريبية حول مواضيع الوعي المدني ومقاربة النوع الاجتماعي والتنظيم المجتمعي.

تأسس برنامج الوعي المدني عام 2020 ايماناً بالإمكانيات الفردية للشبان/ات السوريين/ات ويسعى الى جعل فرص التعلم متاحة. يهدف  البرنامج لخلق أرضية مجتمعية  مهيأة للمساهمة في إيجاد مساحة و فرص للمواطنين والمواطنات، لاكتساب المعرفة والأدوات للانخراط في العمل المدني  وتفعيل المشاركة الفاعلة للجميع .

The CAP is founded on the tenet that deepening the civic awareness of Syrian activists and students will abet greater civic engagement and pave the way for an inclusive, democratic, and peaceful future for Syria


يرتكز البرنامج على فكرة تعميق ثقافة الوعي المدني لدى الناشطين والناشطات الشابات والطلاب والطالبات السوريين، وتشجيعهم على المشاركة المدنية على نطاق أوسع، مما يمهد الطريق لبناء مستقبل سلمي وديمقراطي وعادل لسوريا.

Overall, 753 university students, independent activists, and their community members in northern Syria have been engaged through the CAP. 37 training rounds addressing civic awareness topics, gender and gendered approaches to civic awareness, and community mobilization have been implemented.

وبشكل إجمالي فقد شارك في البرنامج حتى الآن  /753/ من طلاب وطالبات الجامعات، والناشطين المستقلين والناشطات المستقلات، وأفراد من مجتمعاتهم في شمال سوريا.

In light of the emergent nature of Syrian civil society, many civil society groups are yet to develop their capacities for citizen engagement, thus creating a gap in opportunities for citizens to acquire the knowledge and tools to initiate action. 

تأسس برنامج الوعي المدني عام 2020 ايماناً بالإمكانيات الفردية للشبان/ات السوريين/ات ويسعى الى جعل فرص التعلم متاحة. يهدف  البرنامج لخلق أرضية مجتمعية  مهيأة للمساهمة في إيجاد مساحة و فرص للمواطنين والمواطنات، لاكتساب المعرفة والأدوات للانخراط في العمل المدني  وتفعيل المشاركة الفاعلة للجميع.

Through a bottom-up approach to oral history research, women from the Syrian refugee community in Turkey have conducted interviews with other women in their communities. Thus far, a total of 150 interviews with Syrian women and approximately 250 recorded hours have been produced.

في ظل حروب السرديات القائمة، يُعتبر إقصاء وتهميش أصوات النساء السوريات قضية حاضرة. يهدف مشروع التاريخ الشفوي للنساء السوريات إلى تعبئة النساء المُلهمات للقيام بدور فعال في الحفاظ على السردية التاريخية لسوريا. تكمن استثنائية نهج التاريخ الشفوي في طريقة إجرائه المتجذّرة قاعدياً، إذ تكون الباحثات جزءاً من المجتمعات التي يجرين فيها العمل الميداني. وهذا جزء من إيماننا بضرورة أن يقود السوريون والسوريات إنتاج المعرفة والحفاظ على الذاكرة.

Rooted in a bottom-up approach, our oral history program is unique in that all our female researchers are members of the same communities in which they conduct their field work. This approach stems from our philosophy that knowledge production and memory preservation processes should be locally-owned and led directly by Syrians themselves. 

تكمن استثنائية نهج التاريخ الشفوي في طريقة إجرائه المتجذّرة قاعدياً، إذ تكون الباحثات جزءاً من المجتمعات التي يجرين فيها العمل الميداني. وهذا جزء من إيماننا بضرورة أن يقود السوريون والسوريات إنتاج المعرفة والحفاظ على الذاكرة.

In the highly contested construction of Syrian narratives, women’s perspectives remain acutely absent as their voices are marginalized, if not excluded entirely. The Syrian Women's Oral History Project aims to mobilize inspiring women to take on an active role in the preservation and production of Syria’s historical narratives. In providing these women with the opportunity share their unique insights into the social, cultural and political dimensions of the Syrian context, this project underscores the preservation of their memories and equips future generations with a more nuanced and inclusive representation of recent Syrian history.

في ظل حروب السرديات القائمة، يُعتبر إقصاء وتهميش أصوات النساء السوريات قضية حاضرة. يهدف مشروع التاريخ الشفوي للنساء السوريات إلى تعبئة النساء المُلهمات للقيام بدور فعال في الحفاظ على السردية التاريخية لسوريا. فسرد ما حدث يشمل الأبعاد الاجتماعية والثقافية والسياسية للسياق السوري وتمكننا الرواية من الحفاظ على ذاكرتنا وتتيح المجال للأجيال القادمة معرفة ما حدث.

Writing Syrian women into the narrative

النساء السوريات يَكتبن ويُكتبن في السردية 

As part of the program activities, the researchers have conducted interviews with Syrian women residing in three different Turkish cities, Mardin, Gaziantep and Istanbul, in order to reach Syrian women from diverse geographical, social and cultural backgrounds. A total of 171 interviews have been conducted and recorded, and at the present time, the archive contains over 300 hours of recorded material.

وضمن برنامج التاريخ الشفوي، أجرت الباحثات مقابلات مع نساء سوريات مقيمات في ثلاثة مدن تركية، مادرين وغازي عينتاب وإسطنبول حرصاً على الوصول الى سوريات من خلفيات جغرافية واجتماعية وثقافية متنوعة.  تم إجراء 171 مقابلة وتسجيلها. يحتوي الأرشيف على ما يزيد عن 300 ساعة مسجلة.
